The New New

I had an incredible experience writing songs during my artist residency with JTHAR in March of 2016.  Would you still like me if I shared a Desert Demo Double Feature with you?  Slow thy roll and gaze upon thy shoes…

As you know, I’m always experimenting in different genres.  I also wrote a blues, a punkggae, and a shoegaze r&b flight.  You’ll hear them.  Clark and I have been rehearsing with some wonderful musicians, and we plan to start playing out regularly in late September of 2016.  Here are some pics of the material test & celebration show we did at HM157 on April 30, 2016:

The tempo at which information comes in may increase, yet the simple bliss of drawing and exhaling breath remains ever constant.  How I love Earthen times and all their beauties.

April powers!

Hi All!  I have much to share and announce. Check it out!

SXSW was fantastic. I worked with a giant 8 piece band playing all original songs in Clark Dark & Starvon Washington’s intended arrangements. Thank you Austin, Scrote, and the excellent musicians who created music with me. I saw great bands, and was stoked show off my wares. Buzzbands LA’s Kevin Bronson had the below to say. Kevin has great taste. Keep up with the bands he’s discovering here: http://www.buzzbands.la

THANK U! for reading. This is a wonderful and incredible journey. I’m so excited to release this two headed beast of a record into your arms. I hope you will all love it very much, as I do. I can barely wait to record new tunes, too! Perhaps I’ll get to record them soon and shoot them out like single silver bullets over the course of this year.

BONUS!  Live Video from Genghis Cohen.

The Latest…..

Hi All ~ Here’s an update on my 2013 goings-on.

Tunnel Vision & Murdergram are going to be released as one long-playing vinyl album on Zappa Records! I’m very excited about this! The LIGHT and the DARK sides of me will yin and yang dang doodle as one!  Tripsie Daisy!

I co-wrote and recorded a new album with the The Stripminers .   The songs are great.  I mostly play keyboards on this record, believe it or not.  ‘Twas a totally new experience for me.  I did, however, also get to sing lead and write the lyric & melody for one song, “Angels Devils”.  It’s an ode to my all-nighter party people friends whom have meant so much to me over the years.  I can hardly wait to share that with you.

The keyboard spaceship I played on The Stripminers’ new record. Most of these rad instruments were loaned to me by bass & tech god, Brett Simons. He’s a great dude.

April led me to MAUI to sing with Casino Royale.  We played & sang all the best 60’s songs for a big psychedelic party at the Grand Wailea resort.   They flew us all out there at the last minute, and I’m so glad!  Maui is a beautiful, beautiful lady, and quite a muse to me.  : )

Casino Royale just before hitting the stage in Maui…

I also played some wild odds n ends for AOEDE’s new album.  We recorded at the legendary Ocean Way Studios in Hollywood.  It was my first time recording there, and I was thrilled.  The musician personnel was superb, and AOEDE’s writing very whimsical and fantastic.

In my iso booth playing for Aoede at Ocean Way. Yes, that’s a Michael Jackson gold? platinum? plaque on the wall just outside of the door.

I’ve also been active with princessFrank and the KILLSISTERS.  We played a couple of shows and are working on a video art project for Austin Young.  You can read about the concept by following that link.  I’m pretty sure you can even participate in the making of the video.  It’s an art project involving everyone who comes to set.

Is that it?     Hmmm….not quite.  I most recently sang lead on a couple of tunes in a show that was interpreting Burt Bacharach songs.  I did “Close To You” in a pretty wild way.  We performed the song just like the recording until after the instrumental section then played the entire song in reverse.  ‘Twas mind bending!!  I had a tripod up to record it, and as soon as I hit the stage for my numbers, the darn camera ran out of memory!! Krikey!  Meant to be?  Grrrr….There were MANY great musicians and singers on the gig.  We had a great time.

So, yeah!  Moving on!  I’ve been wanting to update this blog for a while ::wipes sweat from brow::.  It always feels good to get ‘er done.  I wanna end this with a throwback photo from my days with The Peak Show.  Here I am on stage with the B-52’s.  They invited us on stage to dance to Rock Lobster with them.  One my favorite moments ever!  I’m wearing the blue hat and pink flapper dress.

Be well.  Stay positive and do the things that your highest good inner voice is asking you to.

Oh my gosh!  I almost forgot!  Fun news! My very first talk show musical guest performance has aired! I play 100 Proof, from my debut E.P., Tunnel Vision, written with Clark Dark. The music starts at 20:55. Came out great!  Nicholas Burns & the Night Owls did a super job backing me up. Thanks friends!   100 Proof on the John Kerwin Show.

Rockin’ out with the B-52’s….one of my favorite bands of all time. This pic is old skool circa 2003!

With amazing, versatile singer, songwriter, and musician, Gaby Moreno at the Bacharach interpretation. She got out her big ole soul voice for this one!

The Arms of My Artistry…

 Hello friends,

The time has come to update you on my goings-on.

I have a handful of shows coming up..they’re with 4 different bands.  I guess I’ve diversified!             So when you look at the detailed show schedule in the TOUR section here’s what you                           should know about each of these bands.

At Nic’s Martini Lounge in Beverly Hills – I sing lead on 3 full sets of jazz & pop standards.                 We do many tunes from “Ain’t Misbehavin'” to “Paparazzi”.  This is select Thursdays –                         see the show schedule if you’re interested in coming out.  Admission is free.                                            The musicians in the band with me are quite good.  It’s fun to play with them & ride the aural surf   in new ways.  Michael Papillo is the musical director on this one.

THE STRIPMINERS – I’ve been playing as a side musician & backup vocalist in this band                   for just over a year.  It’s a modern punk / americana mash of fun & goodness.  A vinyl single               has just been released.  We’ll be doing shows in L.A. & Northern California in March.                           Oh yeah, I play guitar, keys, bvs, accordion, and banjo in this band.  Photo by Elizabeth Sloan.           We’re playing at The Viper Room this Saturday, March 3rd.  Buy Tix & get details HERE.

My TRIO! – So, you know about this, but what you don’t know is that we’re working on                       doing some recordings of MISFITS songs.  In the interest of that, we’re going to play                           some of those songs at Cheetah’s strip club on March 9th.  We’re aiming for versions                            that will be good for the dancers there.  Train wreck or Triumph?  It remains to be seen.                     Come out if u wanna watch us STRIVE.  $5 – with Paul Chesne (so you know for sure that it will be fun). Here’s me with my new tenor electric ELEUKE.  The thing is shred-capable, so it’s a whole new era in my uke exploration.

CASINO ROYALE – I am pleased to be going to LAS VEGAS at the end of March to sing with them.  I’ll sing lead on 60’s songs like, “These Boots Were Made for Walkin'”, “I Say A Little Prayer”, and hopefully “Superstar” by the Carpenters.  Whatever.  I just need to get a good wig and it’s on.  Even if I don’t get a wig, it’s still on.  I love Vegas.  There will also be a male lead singer to do all the great tunes from that era that were sung by men.  His name is Paul and he’s bad-ass.  I’ve seen him do it.

Other Info, Press, and Activity:

Did I ever tell you about YELLOW BIRD the song I sang for The Looney Tunes Show?  It wasn’t so long ago.  End of last year, really. It’s been airing on Cartoon Network ever since.  youtu.be/_qF-USy_twQ.  Fu*kin proud of that.  (thank u nikki, drew, and gerald white)

L.A. WOMEN OF ROCK – I was so pleased to be invited to be in this group of rocking women.  SunsetStrip.com did an article on all of us & they used my quote.  The whole list of ladies is at the bottom of the page.  You’d be doing good digging if you looked up each and every one of them.  Here’s a photo by Genie Sanchez. Taryn Nicole Piana did my hair and makeup..  If u need a makeup artist, you should write to her.  Contact me for details.

SO, finally…my Tunnel Vision E.P. is still available on iTunes and Amazon. Buy a copy. It’s only $6, and it helps me when u buy it.

And one last word – I’m taking a class at The Songwriting School Of Los Angeles.  It’s taught by Grammy winner, Tim Fagan.   They have a lot of great classes and smart, successful instructors.  I highly recommend the school.

Oh Yeah! and my friend and co-writer, Clark Dark, has moved to Los Angeles.  We’re in cahoots.  The process is secret.

Thank you for reading.  I hope to see you soon.  Please write to me with your thoughts, feelings, personal updates, etc.

Hello 2012!

2012 kicked off at a show in Pioneertown, CA (near Joshua Tree) with The Stripminers.

We had a great time doing this one.  The day started with a drive to the desert.  Upon arrival, we checked into the Pioneertown Motel and headed over to Pappy and Harriet’s.  Food was served…the broccoli and barbeque was notable, The Paul Chesne Band opened up, and then The Country  (members of Gram Rabbit) played a full set of new songs.

Here’s a pic by Paul Chesne:

Rumor has it that we will be playing a show at The Viper Room on March 3, 2012.

In the meantime, I am learning more Misfits songs…..stay tuned, as I hope to do some live shows of Misfits songs in late Feb. with my trio……

I am so proud to announce that this song I sang for The Looney Tunes Show has aired on Cartoon Network! Thanks to Niki & Drew for recommending me, Warner Bros for hiring me, and Gerald White for his amazing classes at AFTRA that helped me have a vocal reel ready to submit for the job. Behold….”Yellow Bird” : )

and previously, in the land of cartoons……I sang this one a while back for Scooby Doo and the Legend of the Vampire, “Getaway, Yeah!”……
